Ascent Trip Report

Access Notes

The trailhead is at Dick's Creek Gap Recreation Area, 16 miles west of Clayton, GA on Hwy 76 where US 76 intersects with the AT. From Dick’s Creek Gap, hike the AT for 3.1 miles up to Buzzard Knob with a very short off-trail hike to the summit. At coordinates N34.93310° W83.60177° at mile 3.0, on the AT, make a slight left turn off trail. The elevation here should be 3660 feet ASL. The summit is at 3740 feet or 80 feet of vertical away (or 24.3 meters of vertical). Stepping off trail at this point will ensure that you are on the AZ. A very short distance – say 200 feet will get you well within the AZ. Proceeding a bit further on the AT to coordinates N34.93612° W83.60133° will yield a less steep bushwhack but not by much. Elevation gain from Dick’s Creek Gap is 1800 feet in 3.1 miles.

Do not attempt access via Mr. Bert Road to the point where the road (which turns into a rugged and muddy Jeep trail) intersects the AT. There is a no trespassing sign on Mr. Bert Road a mile away from the intersection with the AT.
