Ascent Trip ReportFirst, the elevation given for this HP is incorrect. The elevation of 964 is for the intersection of the frontage road with the entrance to the NM. The nearby bench mark has an elevation of 965 according to the USGS BM listing, as reported by Andy Martin. The topographic map shows a small 980-foot contour just northwest of the NW corner of the White House, and the ground conforms to this.
The entrance to the NM is just a short distance north of the Jessamine County line off US 27. It is well signed and one turns first onto a frontage road and them into the NM entrance. I arrived at 8:30 a.m., and the Monument was supposed to open at 9. But the gate was open, so I drove in and parked in the parking area on the south side of the White House. From there it was a short walk to the three flagpoles on the west side of the house. I thought the highest ground was about 30 feet north, or NNW, of the flagpoles. The coordinates I got were N37.79792, W84.60197. Others may feel that the highest ground is a few feet away from those coordinates, but they're close. Make your own judgment. |
