Ascent Trip Report

Peak name is spelled Thomkins on the BM and Tompkins Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway sign. From the Tompkins Knob overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway (MP272.5) follow the recently cleared (and not yet marked) Mountain-to-Sea Trail W/SW for about a half mile along the ridge. When the trail begins to skirt the north flank of the mountain, make your own path and stay on the ridge to the summit (approx one-third mile). BM is marked by a rock cairn. The summit is completely forested. Caution: Because the summit is nearly level and there is no marked path, it would be easy to get disoriented when finding your way back down. If you don't have a compass or GPS, head for the traffic noise from the Parkway. The MST parallels the Parkway.
