Ascent Trip Report

2nd peak in a 4 peak hike in the Western Craggy Mountains range.

After ascending Snowball Mountain, descend steeply through several switchbacks to a saddle that seems far too long below. Remember this descent because it will cost you on the way back. Foot placement is key. After reaching the open and flowery gap, the trail ascends steeply to several open vistas that afford amazing views of Snowball Mountain, the BRP down to Asheville and the western peaks of the Black Mountains (Big Butt, Little Butt and Point Misery). You will need all four appendages to get to the top. On the way back, make sure you match your willpower with caution. The way down is often the hardest path either way.

I lunched here on the return trip and watched the raptors fly and dip into and around the mountaintops. Very remote. Would be surprised if you see anyone at the summit. Makes you understand actual distance is relative. Elevation gain and loss is king.

HP is above the rocky outcrops in the woods near the trail.
