Ascent Trip Report

A mostly beautiful July day spent ticking off a few more peaks in the sourdough ridge. Five hours car to car with lunch @ Slide mountain. From sunrise point the trail to upper palisades is in great shape. Views of the lakes along the way are nice, bring your bugspray or cover up. Mosquitoes were merciless if you stopped for more than a few seconds. Reaching the end of maintained trail the boothpath to Brown peak is to the right before heading downhill to upper palisades lake. Easy to find. Trail to brown peak was in surprisingly good shape. A little rutted from rain in a few spots but easy to navigate. Looking N out from the top of brown through the trees you'll see the ridge to Slide. Trail looks easy to follow from this vantage, you'll bias the E side of the ridge when you get closer to avoid trees, then cross back to the west side for an easier trail up to south Slide. Following the trail from here was a bit of choose your own adventure. There are many many game trails covering the top of Brown, I followed the east side of the ridge, losing a little elevation, following the game trails until they went into the trees then I moved up to regain the ridge. Saw about 20 elk from the saddle between slide and brown running down into bear park, first time seeing them here. Once you head out to slide it will be no surprise that the elk spend a lot of time on this ridge. Dirt wallows everywhere, fresh droppings everywhere you step and it basically smelled like a barn. Good times.
