Ascent Trip ReportThe Kiowa County highpoint is located in a very remote part of eastern Colorado and you will need to drive on a ranch field road for several miles in order to reach the trailhead, but I made it there easily in my low clearance Ford Focus. I visited the highpoint coordinates given on the Peakbagger website, but Dave Covill's county highpointing guidebook had coordinates about 1/4 mile to the southwest. Unfortunately, I did not know about this when I visited this area, so I only climbed the Peakbagger spot, but that's the website I log my climbs on, so I guess it's okay. I called the phone numbers given in Dave Covill's book to ask permission, but no one answered, so I left a message of my intension and proceeded. From where I parked my car I was only .65 air mile from the Peakbagger highpoint coordinates across an extremely flat, dry prairie. I left my car and reached a barbed wire fence after covering .59 mile in 15 minutes. The fence had several broken strands, so it was easy to cross and I reached the coordinates for the highpoint after covering .72 mile in 19 minutes from my car. The view to the west was surprising with the relief of the bluff that gave much more of a highpoint feel compared to most of the eastern Colorado county highpoints I have visited. I returned to my car in 19 minutes after covering .68 mile from the highpoint and drove back across the long ranch road with no problems. This was a big relief because it would have been a long walk to get help if I had any problems.
