Ascent Trip Report

No real access issues. Used approach referenced in John Stolk TR. The road is car compatible until 3100' and then becomes high-clearance 2WD to trailhead. As noted in other reports, it's best to park at 3840' instead of gate at 4000' which offers no turnaround. Hike the road up to switchback and then a bit further. Proceed up obvious ATV track (so much for the gate being effective). This heads straight uphill and is easy to follow. From there it sort of dies at perhaps 4300'. Some light brush which gets increasingly worse until reaching old lookout site. From here, old abandoned overgrown road heads towards true summit. While the segment of road going to old lookout site is long abandoned, the road coming in from NE basin is still used to get to comm tower junk in the saddle area. Dumpy building with no trespassing signs on it. You can see in track that I contoured a little wide here, being super cautious. The road ends at building so the mapped trail is a long abandoned, grassy, but relatively brush free road bed with a few down trees. Once nearby, contour up on grassy slopes to the summit area which is open and afford views. On the descent, I tracked a bit further N which was definitely preferable as this avoided brush. This was at most a faint path but easy to pick out more open terrain. I then cut left at some point to rejoin the ATV track although it probably would have been just as good to stay on the parallel track all the way down to road. No big deal either way.
