Ascent Trip ReportStayed the previous night at the Double Spring Gap Shelter. I was the first person out at about 06:30. The weather had changed and it was now cold and rainy with gusty winds. I was warned by a SOBO (south bound) hiker the day before that Clingmans Dome was a circus. I arrived on top at about 08:00 on a Sunday and nobody was there. I went up on the observation tower, but there was really nothing to see because the visibility was about 50 meters. I looked at the photos and descriptions of what I would see on a nice day, but didn't stay long as I was getting chilled. The trail from here to Newfound Gap was mostly standing water. I did meet 2 people working on the trail a few miles from Clingmans Dome (that's some dedication). When I got to Newfound Gap, I hitched into Gatlinburg to resupply and take a day off.
