Ascent Trip ReportThis was a part of a trip to knock off some Nebraska COHPs "on the way" from my parents' house to OMA. As such it took all day. Rock, Brown, Keya Paha, Boyd, Knox, Cedar, Pierce, Wayne, and Dixon were on the menu for the day. We could have perhaps hit a couple counties near the driving route, but I did not want to push it with my wonderful and longsuffering wife.
Between Keya Paha County and Boyd County the shift from grassy sandhills to farmland (primarily corn) was evident. In the cases where the high points lied in corn and beanfields, I was not as concerned with contacting the property owners, because my experience growing up in Nebraska is that farmers tend to have little to no concern with people walking in their fields. (If anything they will be bemused by anyone dumb enough to walk through corn as a leisure activity.)
I never met Adam Helman, but in Dixon County at least, he haunted me from the grave. His thoroughness which resulted in confirming 9 additional areas for the county in addition to the southern area that was at one time the only point required visiting was a nice punch to the gut at the end of a long day.
Area 1 is within 100 yards of the road in a cornfield, 1/4 mile from a house.
Areas 9-10 are 8 miles north in a cornfield; I simply walked 200 yards toward the pivot.
Areas 6-8 are another mile north, in another cornfield, 400 yards in. Hooray.
Areas 2-5 are another 1/2-mile north, one on the grassy side of the road and the other three in...wait for it...corn. By this point I was burned out and lazy so I stepped out of the car. Regardless, I am counting it. My parents are disappointed in me too, albeit for different reasons; you can have their phone number if you like. |
