Ascent Trip Report

Great outing from Virginia Lakes… though this approach does involve some up and down, it is shorter than from Green Lakes (at least if going up the south side of Camiaca), passes by the nice scenery of Virginia Lakes, has a great view of Camiaca for the last half of the approach, and much higher starting trailhead so about the same net elevation gain.

On the way up we lost the trail at Frog Lakes… a snowdrift disguised the creek crossing and we followed one of many use trails near the lake a ways before realizing our mistake. The view from the pass is fantastic, both back to Virginia Lakes and continuing down the trail looking out at Camiaca. It appeared daunting and further than I had hoped for this dayhike, but reaching it turned out to be faster than it appeared.

Left the trail below the pass at about 10,400 feet to minimize elevation loss and wrap around to Summit Lake. Glissaded the first 200 feet of this and with all the snow this year about 1/3 of the way to Summit Lake was on bits of snow. From the lake it was a generic ascent, but thankfully not nearly as loose as it appears, straight up to the saddle east of the summit. Ascended the shallow rib to the right of the gully leading to this saddle, and happily was able to glissade most of the way back down in the gully from the saddle… less than 15 minutes from the summit back to the lake! Also got a short glissade from the pass back to the highest of Virginia Lakes.
