Ascent Trip ReportThere isn't a great way to approach Citadel. The North Cirque (ford, brush), Virginia Creek (sidehill, brush), and Blackfoot Basin (distance) routes each have major drawbacks. I guess we decided that we didn't mind distance, because we started our trip at Lake McDonald Lodge. We hiked to Sperry to spend an evening with trail crew friends, then the second day crossed the spectacular Blackfoot Basin and encamped in a little stream valley directly below the Dusty Star-Citadel saddle. On the third day, we climbed both peaks and descended Virginia Creek back to the Sun Road. The descent from camp took only three hours but in places was very unpleasant. Conor said that if we'd been trying to ascend that way he would have turned back.
The view from Citadel is one of the best in the park! Any peak that's immediately north or east of the park's few glaciers can be counted on to be a spectacular viewpoint. Crowfoot, Kaina, and Bearhat are other examples.
