Ascent Trip ReportMatt and I attempted Red Baldy from White Pine Lake as a day hike. We made it up to the lake just fine and decided to head for the pass between Red & White Baldy instead of just up the norhtwest face of Red Baldy (like my previous and subsequent ascents). The route wasn't the problem, the weather was. A typical August afternoon in the Wasatch includes a thunderstorm. We took shelter under some boulders to stay dry and avoid lightning. When it cleared up a bit, we headed back down. Lightning is dangerous on the high ridges of the Wasatch and not worth messing with just to bag a peak. We ended up just below the pass over to Silver Glance Lake but didn't quite top out on the pass or the peak. |
