Ascent Trip ReportI was surprised when I arrived at the parking area for Yucca House National Monument at 37.25195 N 108.68609 W only to discover that I was in the driveway of a private residence. I was very uncomfortable leaving my car parked there to visit the monument, which was behind a fence just a few dozen feet to the south, so when I saw a man drive up on a tractor I approached him to ask if it was okay to park here. The man replied,"Everyone does." At this point I was only 505 air feet from the highpoint, but I wanted to visit the Yucca House ruins first, so I followed a trail from the monument's boardwalk entrance and quickly arrived at the very visible ruins. From here I headed northwest through a maze of trails and some uncomfortable bushwhacking to the northwest corner of the monument, which is the location of the highest natural point. Before I reached this spot I thought I was on the highest point until I realized I was standing on some ruins instead. It took me 9 minutes to return to my car, but I did stop to sign the register at the entrance to the monument on the way back. |
