Ascent Trip Report

Alto Diablo, Shields Peak, Anderson Peak, San Bernardino Peak East, San Bernardino Peak

Total distance: 20.5 miles
Elevation gain: 4933 according to GPS, 6000+ as estimated by me
Total time: 13 hours 13 minutes
Start time: 6:40am
Trailhead: Foresee Creek Trail
Accomplishments by list: HPS #41 and #42

Difficulty of hike: 10 out of 10. Really had to push myself to return to SB East and SB Peak. And the return hike through John's Meadow took way longer than expected.

Views during hike: 8 out of 10. None of the peaks had 360 degree views, but the views that were available were amazing on each peak.

Climbing on the descent: a lot. Each of the 5 peaks is at least 200 extra feet added. And the trail from John's Meadow to the trailhead has a deceptive amount of uphill as well. 300-500 additional feet, as estimated by me.

People seen: 40+. About 15 campers descending from Jackstraw, then a pair getting ready to climb Shields as I was coming off it, then a pair that summited Anderson just after I did, then maybe 10-15 others on SB Peak or just below it. 1 tent in Limber Pine CG and 3 tents in John's Meadow CG.

Animals seen: none

I was originally planning to do Anderson and Shields following Robert Luher's tracks from November 2017. Then, the night before the hike as I was researching it, I found a HikingInSoCal blog which described the Foresee Loop. I realized that when I hiked SB Peak 3 weeks prior, the turnoff for John's Meadow that I saw and wisely didn't attempt, connects back to the Foresee trailhead. I still wasn't convinced I would do the loop. I intentionally did Alto Diablo first, which seemed like a fairly easy addition, then Shields and then Anderson. Only when I was at the saddle between Anderson and SB East did I decide to push for the last 2 peaks and complete the loop. This added many not-easy miles to the hike, but I was able to bag all 5 peaks.

I disagree with Mr. Luher about Shields being the least favorite. I don't like scree fields that are loose, but the one on Shields was solid, and for me, quite fun to climb. I came in from the east, and the grade wasn't too bad. Exited northwest, again, not on any kind of trail. Afterwards, the climb to Anderson was also cross country, but more on dirt.

When I summitted SB Peak and SB East 3 weeks prior, route finding was very difficult between them due to snow. By this hike almost all the snow was gone, and route finding was not an issue. But it's still quite a bit of up and down in that saddle, and my least favorite part of the hike.

The register on SB East is still missing, and so is the register on Shields.
