Ascent Trip ReportI climbed Mount Desor as part of a 4-day backpacking trip on Isle Royale, covering all three major trails and all four ranked peaks.
Day 1: ferry from Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor, hike in to Hatchet lake on Greenstone Ridge Trail (9h and 22 miles)
Day 2: hike from Hatchet Lake to Feldtmann Lake (12h and 28 miles)
Day 3: hike through Windigo, and on to Todd Harbor via Minong Ridge Trail (14h and 30 miles)
Day 4: hike back to Rock Harbor via Daisy Farm (9h and 20 miles)
The trails are all good, including the much-feared Minong Ridge Trail. With a light pack (6 lb baseweight, no-cook), I was able to keep my 190 lb dad-bod moving at a steady 2.5 mph pace after accounting for periodic breaks. Water is a challenge with many of the trails going on ridges with a big drop down to clean lakes. Most of the streams are nasty and black, with moose + beaver poop in it. Definitely bring a water filter since chemical or UV treatment doesn't kill the tape worms. I only had 1L of water capacity and wished that I had 1.5L.
