Ascent Trip Report

Zinger's August 2016 directions are excellent. In late May I tried to get up the road to hike this hill, but there was a small lake just wider than the road just past the bridge after turning off ME16 which I decided was impassable. On June 4 I did a scouting run and the gravel roads had just been graded, and I was able to get within a half mile of the parking area (a tree was down blocking me at that point). By July 5 someone had trimmed the fallen tree back enough for my car to pass. The roads are in a condition that any car can make it to the steep turn uphill at 3.1 miles from ME16. There is a big white truck parked at this intersection (just beyond the turn), though it has license plates on it and may not be there forever. From this point I had no problem getting to the 4.3 mile mark in my Subaru Outback. A car with less ground clearance could make it with caution (my car is new, so I am scratch, scrape and dent averse). From 3.1 to 4.3 miles, the road has NOT been regraded.

Otherwise the hike is very straightforward. From the wide open parking area continue about 0.9 miles as the road narrows and becomes a wooded trail. There is a big boulder about 400 feet before the sharp left turn on the boundary cut followed by two blown down trees blocking the path - the second one about 100 feet before the turn. I was expecting the boundary cut to be much wider - it is a narrow trail. The turn was marked with two small cairns and a yellow stake lying on the bank. Relatively easy to follow the herd path all the way up - a couple of blow downs to navigate around.
