Ascent of Fortress Mountain on 2019-07-07
|Date:||Sunday, July 7, 2019|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||8760 ft / 2670 m|
Ascent Trip ReportApproached via Buck Creek Trail and then up the braids of unmaintained trails to below Pass No-Pass. Camped in the trees at a beautiful campsite at 5900ft. Woke in the morning to wet meadows and minimal visibility; in a cloud. Headed towards Pass No-Pass and started east up the wet meadow slopes at 6200ft aiming for a break in the short cliff band I recalled seeing the day before on my scramble of Helmet Butte. Somehow found the break in the clouds but ended up staying too high, closer to the ridge, that meant having to fight through drenching trees and missing the mellow sloped snow fields. Luckily the clouds broke momentarily at 7500ft to reveal the final route to the summit. Ascended east up a large bootable snow field till rock ramps towards the summit became visible. In a cloud so no views from the top.
