Ascent Trip Report

First and foremost, the name of the entire park in Bukhansan. The name of the peak (highpoint) is Baegundae. So when you are navigating, follow the signs for Baegundae, because "Bukhansan" will take you any number of places in the park. That said, highly recommend a trail map from the information centers before you begin your ascent. The signage is great if you can read Korean, but otherwise a little navigating goes a long way.

The previous day we rode from Incheon to the east side of the mountain and got lost along the way. Three hours later we made it, but after a late start and frustrated we decided to hike the "Dulegil" route which appears to circumnavigate the perimeter of the park. It was my first time on the metro, so the learning curve was ugly.

Day 2 I woke up early, and hit the metro again bound for Gupabal Station, making it to the west side of the park in an hour and 40 minutes. (Much faster). Walked the city roads to one of the west entrances with a temple. I'd say about a mile. I didn't turn my GPS on until the temple. Hiked north on the Dulegil route to make it to the main entrance that has the fortress. From there I turned east to begin the true ascent route. There was an option for an easy route and difficult route. I elected to blast straight up the side giving an approximate gain of 2,000 feet over the almost final 1.3 miles. Most of the climb is on natural stone steps/scramble with occasional wooden stairs and boardwalks. The true final 300 meters is an exposed scramble with metal cables to assist.

I thoroughly enjoyed the views from the top, and the beautiful sunny (and hot) day. The hike down was along the east side following signs to the information station, until the trail split, and then followed signs for ranger station 2. Finished the walk along some city streets with 7-Eleven type stores and much needed water. Ended at the Buhkansan-UI Station, and took 2 hours on the metro to get back to Incheon. All-in-all it was a 10 hour day from start to finish.
