Ascent Trip Report

There are several ways to get to Sierra Pelada using routes noted on the website which is popular with mountain bikers. I hiked up Atalaya Mtn using the Atalaya Trail. From the top, I hiked down the NE Ridge staying on the east side of the ridge to pickup a user trail that takes you down to the Watershed Boundary trail. You should encounter Santa Fe watershed warning signs twice, one on the user trail and again near the junction with the Watershed Boundary Trail. The Watershed Boundary Trail turns into an old 4WD road. Eventually you will see a single track trail (Sierra Pelada Trail) on your right which follows a ridgeline. The Sierra Pelada Trail goes right to the mountain, climbing around the South side. The trail does not go to the summit so a short open forest hike is necessary. Its about five miles round trip from the summit of Atalaya.
