Ascent Trip Report

Via Cold Springs Trailhead / South Approach.

My wife and 2 dogs came with, not with plans for them to summit but simply to enjoy some time camping. We hiked for a couple hours on 06/21 before we got to 7200'. My intention was to make it to 9000' before setting up camp, but my wife was done for the day. Besides that we were near a stream and not having to melt snow was appealing.

Winter route seemed to be the default on approach day but the summer route is good to go and more were opting for that on Saturday.

Up and moving at 3:15 a.m. Summit by 8:15 a.m. Encountered some who had started from the TH at midnight; by the time I got to Lunch Counter at 6 a.m. a steady stream of climbers was approaching from below. From the false summit I was dealing with a headache and some nausea; at the summit I had a couple dry heaves and elected to descend immediately. Once back at Lunch Counter I was doing much better. Altitude sickness is quite rare for me but seems to have hit my last couple occasions above 11K feet. At any rate it was good to descend quickly as forecasts were calling for much higher winds in the afternoon.

Pace back to the tent was quite leisurely. Once there, packed up with the wife and dogs and headed back down to the car.
