Ascent Trip ReportDIRECTIONS
Google to Gray Wolf Ridge TH above Dungeness TH. Paved, then well-graded, then acceptable road to TH fine for passenger car. A little steep when dropping to the Dungeness Forks Camp.
A great little scramble! I just wish the weather had been nicer because the views are probably amazing.
Steep trail to ridge! ~3300 feet in ~2.2miles. Good trail the whole way though. Unfortunately in the cloud ceiling from ~5500 onward...
Westside of Baldy is a bit steep but has good scree chutes for down and enough rock outcrops on way up that it's no biggy. As other trip reports have mentioned, best to just reascend it on the way back than try to establish a different down route. Tried to skirt the next ridge hump but went a little low and had a gross ascending traverse to get back on track. Clear boot track all the way to summit. Got a bit off route in the clouds several times but is obvious with visibility and/or GPS. Followed the boot path to the North on the way up the true summit ridge, and took the ridge scree direct on descent. Tiny 3rd class moves on summit block. Interesting micro-fractures shale all along summit ridge.
Was going to tag Tyler as well but rain was starting, no views, and not on my priority list.
Nice pair of local guys had departed TH before me to camp at saddle. Still seemed intent when I came back through despite the coming rain. Was pouring by the time I reached the TH again.
1/1 ACCESS - established though primitive TH
2/2 REMOTENESS (Popularity, Sight/Sound) - can't imagine there ever being more than a couple parties on the trail
1/1 CONDITION - established trail/boot track to summit
2/3 VARIETY (Flora and Fauna, Geological, Terrain) - in the woods almost the whole time
2/3 VIEWS - peaks of Deception group on way up; assume incredible views on clear day
(does not include difficulty since hikers may prefer opposite extremes)
