Ascent Trip Report

Followed the path from Nida Plateau SW then W. Path generally easy to follow and marked by red paint dots on rocks periodically. There is then a junction marked with a metal pole with northerly and southerly loops to Mt Ida / Psiloritis. The northerly loop is more direct, but the path is often very hard to see and indicated only by occasional piles of stones and some faded yellow paint marks. The southerly loop is a bit longer, but clearer and marked by red paint dots. I followed the southerly loop. This then divides with red paint dots marking both the route NW to the mountain and a dirt track to the S.

Plenty of snow still present in corries and gullies. Most can be avoided, but the path did run over two snow sections. The first was quite long but shallow, so no trouble with poles. The second was shorter but steeper and required kick-stepping and some finger-gripping to climb over. Probably would have been more sensible for me to go around it.

Nice walk through gorges and with excellent views of Crete on final leg of ascent and at summit. Few other hikers seen on the route from Nida, with most hikers on or near the summit having taken the shorter route from the Mygero Refuge.
