Ascent Trip Report

The drive from Spruce Knob to Backbone Mountain is only about an hour and a half. You do have to be aware so that you don't miss the turnoff/trailhead. I did miss it at first and turned around at the next road. It seems that you can drive up about .2 miles or you can park on the side of the road. I parked on the road since I did not realize about the driving to another parking area. That was fine with me because that portion of the trail was very muddy and rocky and I only have a 2WD vehicle. The elevation gain from the main road below is about 675' over 1.2 miles. I am OBVIOUSLY out of shape because I had to take a major break once and mini breaks every 0.1-0.2 miles..... The summit has a nice little picnic area and register box. It was fun to see 2 people who were recently there from near my hometown! There is tree cover, but there is a clearing which allows for a nice view. On the way down you have to be very careful to turn off the "road" area or else you will walk down private property and eventually you would end up back at the main road, but I'm sure the property owners wouldn't be too pleased. I accidentally missed it and thought to myself, "huh, I don't remember walking this far down the more road-like path..." There were some raspberry bushes that were just starting to produce fruit, not anywhere near ripe yet, but give it 2-3 weeks and they will be. The hike down is also a little difficult, only because it was wet and the chance of slipping was high, combined with all the small rocks which could roll under your feet. The mosquitoes were present, but not overly obnoxious. I saw no ticks on my person or on the hike.
Overall a difficult, for this out of shape person, but pleasant hike.
