Ascent Trip ReportDrove Ken Jones track to a little beyond old Cortez townsite where we intersected the haul road where there is a gate with some non-threatening signage about watching for mine traffic. Went through gate and continued up the road but was shortly stopped by mine employee and told that we were not allowed on the road. We had arrived on a Sunday morning thinking that it would be a quiet but the operation appears to be opperating 24/7.
What to do now? Looked at sat. images to see if there is another access and Horse Canyon looked promising so we gave that a try. Didn't start a track until up the road a ways.
Along the way we there were mining vehicles passing by and we talked to one who said the area is under exploration for mining, no hauling being done. He said we were ok to use the road but be careful of traffic. I was able to piece together the road system to connect with the haul road high up. It didn't seem a good idea to drive the haul road though we didn't see any traffic, didn't want to be kicked out again. We parked a couple hundred yards below the haul road on the road we had driven and headed up on foot, elevation 7440'
There is a steep and high road cut on the haul road, we walked a ways (left) before deciding to climb up the loose slope employing a few brush belays to get us up. Easily crossed the ridge with very little drop to the summit road which we followed to the top.
A good alternative to the standard route as of now but be aware that access may change. If you can approach Horse Canyon road from the east it would avoid going through the mining areas altogether, that's the way we exited.
