Ascent Trip Report

continuation from Gobblers Knob...

amped at the TH. Beautiful sunrise. Up at 5am; packed up camp and hiking by 6am. A PCT thru hiker trail-name "wizard" camped with us; he was from Homer Alaska. Top off his water and wished him best of luck. We took the direct ascent route from the trail (gate). It was steep, loose footing, and had lots of moguls. My only guess they were for erosion control to rehabilitate a firebreak; too steep for mtn biking (with wire cables at the bottom). The direct route takes you to the yellow post first; which has incredible views in all directions. The actual summit is half a football field away (as it is slightly higher). Found and signed the register. From the summit, we descended via the north ridge. This is a much better way (next time I would hike the PCT then ascend this route; while longer, more pleasant with better footing). Once we reached the PCT, we continued north for several miles. We passed one thru hiker heading south; a bit odd time of year for that... Once we reached an elevation of 7760 and SE (below) Peak 7898, we went XC and semi-straight for the summit. The summit has a yellow post but not a single patch of clear (of shrubs) or flat area. Be careful of the edge as it is a minimum 500 foot fall/slide. Had a good break enjoying some snacks and views. At 9am, headed back to the trailhead (south on the PCT). On the way back we encountered ten PCT-thru hikers (I didn't get all the names...one was from germany, "arches", "sage", "downthehill"). They had mentioned they left camp at 3am (at the water cache far below) to beat the heat. It was warm, getting much warmer, plus they are hauling gear upward. Heat advisories were being posted for the coming days all over socal. We donated water to those that wanted some. We were back at the trailhead before 11am (with all the stops to talk to hikers). Enjoyed a beer and four more PCT thru hikers. Then headed home.

Stats are from the north saddle of Gobblers Knob at the PCT (includes all stops, photos, etc)
