Ascent Trip Report

Approaching the hike, I used the great dirt road called Leonard Creek Road which can be accessed by NV highway 140. Roughly 10 miles after the Battle Creek ranch, there is a minor dirt road labeled with a small vertical metal sign saying "designated route" which now provides access to the area (Leonard Creek Road ends into private property a few miles later.

The designated route starts off well but becomes rockier and harder to follow as it goes. We had one steep gully which required 4 wheel drive, possibly even low gear. The road continues down to the old road west of the mountain, which can be used for accessing Dennis Poulin's route for Big Mountain. (The rest of my group did that hike)

This mountain looks impressive (and very challenging) from a distance. It is not as difficult as it looks. While there is some steep loose terrain, there are usually less-loose places to step, and only about 200' of the climb up to the southwest saddle is very steep. Originally expecting to hike from the original road (the one on the topo maps), I was pleasantly surprised that the new public access road to the area comes closer to the route I had planned, making the hike even easier.

There is a large cairn on the summit, along with a register (in a smaller cairn).
