Ascent Trip Report

This otherwise unremarkable peak has a pretty incredible view of the Snake River Range and the Tetons rising up over Palisades Reservoir. There are also good views of nearby prominence peaks Caribou and Big Elk, and the Salt River Range across Star Valley. The Mouth of Snake River Canyon is impressive, with Ferry and Bradley's steep faces shooting up on either side. The hike itself was pretty straightforward; I parked only 2 miles from CR-111 (or whatever Idaho calls it) so it wasn't exactly a drive-up like it is in summer conditions. I took the left road up the valley west of the peak, on foot, and at the terminus of that road I shwacked up to the main summit ridge, following a due-east tack. From there I hit the upper road shortly before the comms towers, where a pleasant and highly scenic ridge stroll led some distance further to the true summit. The register, unfortunately, was buried under snow so I did not sign. As soon as I topped out, a loud crack of thunder dashed my hopes for taking any time to enjoy the view. I hurried back southward, contouring well below the ridge in the higher trees which fortunately provided some nearby shelter. After a ways on the upper road, I bushwhacked back west to the lower road and my car. I was super muddy from the shins down so I took a fully-clothed walk in the creek to wash off before driving home.
