Ascent Trip Report

5/31/2019 - left home 7:30AM
picked up David West at his home
picked up Ed Heyman at his home
drove to Mt. Adams via I-5 and I-84
stopped at Troutdale Taco Bell for lunch while waiting for Hans & Mindy Thygeson who were not far behind after we got going again
Hans then realized he forgot his boots
so after first turning around and heading back to Portland they decided he could buy some in Hood River
We met at the trail head and hiked up ~1600 vertical to below black butte, camped near some small trees
I boiled water while Ed and David set up tent - then Ed discovered that David was planning to sleep with he and I.
I had apparently forgotten to tell Ed that David was not bringing a tent.
We had the tents switched. Eventually David went over and slept in the tent with Hans & Mindy.
Winter climb route
up at 2:30AM aiming to start at 3:30AM
actually got going about 3:55AM
got to top around 10-10:30AM
beautiful weather, light winds - just a little at false summit where Mindy & I ate lunch next to a tent someone had set up there.
Hans charged on ahead alone. Ed fiddled a bit with his skis. David fell behind while Mindy & I assumed he could catch up any time.
David eventually threw up and felt better. Then he napped on snow where it was warm above the false summit. He was probably suffering from altitude sickness.
Hans got to the top then came back down a ways. He turned around and went back up with Mindy & I to the summit and we took pictures.
Ed arrived and we took more pictures.
Eventually Hans and Ed headed down. Mindy & I waited for David. Plan was to wait till at least noon. Ed to radio back if he saw him on way down. David arrived just after they left. More pictures.
Glissaded down - very nice snow conditions. Mindy, David & I together
ate more at camp then packed up and hiked out
my car needed a jump to start
supper at restaurant in Hood River - Sixth Street Bistro
drove home - David kept me awake. I drove till near midnight
David drove last part
Dropped Ed off, then David - he accidentally got my boots, I almost drove off with his keys in the center front pocket
got shower and went to bed 2-2:30AM
