Ascent Trip Report

Good parking area paved. Fee area. $6 to park. Along the Cache la Poudre River which is impressive in this area. Hiked up the standard well marked and well signed trail in the Arapaho National Forest up to the McConnel Mountain Trail which leads into Cache la Poudre Wilderness. The well maintained and easy to follow Mt McConnel trail is a class 1 all the way up to the summit where there is a brief scamper up some boulders class 2 and 2+ to the summit. There are some other nearby false summits you can scramble class 3 if you like and then take the trail around and to the back where it crosses another closed contour peak of similar elevation. As this loop trail heads East and then NE it becomes "primitive" and is signed accordingly. In most places it is very easy to follow but it does have a few places where it gets less obvious, but if you look downhill at each of those places you will always see where it picks back up and goes. At one point it heads fairly far East and level along a ledge to skirt around a steep cliff then has a nifty well cut trail that contours around the outcropping. Impressively cut into the side of the steep hillside. This "primitive" trail is also part of the Mt McConnel loop and is very scenic downclimb. Especially the views of the river below. It swings you back to the parking lot near the bridge.
