Ascent Trip ReportGorgeous evening summit run with the dogs.
I started at the unmarked campsite off FR 711, and bushwacked NE to join the main south-western ridge; from there is a straightforward walk to the summit with only minimal route finding required. The slopes do get steep at times and the route is a mix of lovely rocky steps and some very loose dirt/dust. The summit is surrounded by some very lovely meadows and a few trees, and there's a very satisfying knob of rock at the peak itself.
Signed the log at the summit, soaked up the evening light over Rimrock lake, hung out for a bit and watched some elk graze in the meadows below with my binos, then walked over to the north side of the mountain and looked across the way to the Westfall Rocks. There are almost always mountain goats there, and they didn't disappoint this evening.
Tested my new Salomon XPs by moving as quick as I could down the mountain. I'm a long way from a trail-runner, but scooting down the mountain was definitely more enjoyable in the runners than in my normal Scrapa Zodiacs. |
