Ascent Trip ReportThis was a spur of the moment climb. I was walking back from an already tiresome weekend to l'Étape. I was only 5 minutes away from it that I crossed the power line trench going to Mont Camille-Pouliot's col. I glimpsed at my watch and saw that I still had 2 hours and 40 minutes to wait for my bus. I looked up and told myself I could bag this and be back early enough to have something to eat while waiting.
So I went up the service road and left my pack. Walking along the newly made trench was hard. There was debris everywhere and I had to scramble a bit to make my way through. A little bit further up, I saw an old trail that seemed to go up the south ridge and decided to follow it. It was a wise choice, for a while. The trail soon vanished and all that remained to guide me were the clearly artificially cut stumps of small trees. Even those disappeared and I was left bushwhacking it commando style in what was as tiresome as the earlier stuff. The summit was uncertain. Visibility was too short and I couldn't know what was the highest spot so I walked the whole summit ridge.
When I got to the other side, I decided to just go straight down for the col and the trench. Wrong choice. Going down proved quite hard. I faced 3-stories high pitches a few times where I had to route-find my way, all of it on uncertain footing. That damn peat makes everything not hold firmly. I eventually made it back to the trench and followed the service road all the way to my pack. I was back at l'Étape at 1:45pm.
This summit is clearly not worth the climb except for the fact is has a toponym. Aside from that, it's a waste of energy.
