Ascent Trip Report

I reach Mill Creek Falls CG a night before and visit the falls as I would not have time next day. The trailhead parking may accommodate 6 cars, but the ground is not flat. I simply parked a a nearby campsite. The CG was open but did not collect fee (otherwise $12/night) as the water was not available. (However, toilet paper was available in the restroom.)
Semi-alpine start at 4:28am; good that I scouted the trail up to Clear Lake after visiting Mill Creek Falls at the evening before. Luckily, I started to encounter patchy snow after sunrise. After Poison Flat, the trail (15E13) was mostly buried by snow. I had to carefully look for un-buried segments and guess how it goes. I did not see/feel the Summit Trail even my GPS track crossed it; but just "left" the trail to follow the ridge. From there, the path along the ridge was mostly covered by deep snow, soft at places. I carried crampons but did not think they may help. Snowshoes would definitely help, but not worthy to carry up here. I sank to my lap couples of times.
The summit register is a plastic jar in a rustic metal box. On my descent, I tried to retrace my footsteps but eventually lost them below 8800 until I saw a big cairn (8100) on Summit trail (15E10); then bee-lined to Poison Flat Trail. I took a detour at Poison Flat as I saw a big black mammal like a bear or cow; it is a black bear. It ran away as I approached. The climb from the flat to a small saddle is the major extra elevation gain (120-160 ft) on descent. I took some photos on Clear Lake as I passed it in dark early on and got back to CG at 3:11pm.
