Ascent Trip ReportI traversed the ridge from Mailbox Peak to Dirtybox. It was definitely not for casual hikers--it was very brushy and featured many rock fins or gendarmes that required scrambling to overcome. Perhaps by now a better route from increased traffic is evident. The summit was covered in thick brush and not especially pleasant.
I decided to drop down from Dirtybox into the Granite Creek valley and its logging roads. It was steep and brushy going, at first down to the closest logging road. Once I was there I followed the road down for one switchback, but the snowbanks made it hard to follow the overgrown old road. At the next switchback corner I cold not find the right continuation downhill due to snow, so I just headed straight down instead.
Big mistake. It was very steep and very densely vegetated going, and I nearly got cliffed out a few times. I was basically lowering myself down cliffs using veggie belays for most of the way, and squeezing through narrow tree gaps with branches in my face. I lost my altimeter that was around my neck, it came off somehow and no one will ever find it, that's for sure.
At last I reached the floor of the basin and located the Granite Creek Road/Trail, which I followed on a long way back around to the Middle Fork Road and the Mailbox trailhead.
My Dirtybox descent route worked, but I recommend following the old logging roads as much as possible.
