Ascent Trip Report

Started the climb just beyond Culter Alles Farm to the north west where there is parking by the side of the road.

Followed the private road by Culter Water for 600 metres to where a rough vehicle track rises to the left towards the second block of trees. A track is then followed almost to the summit of Culter Fell. Ignore the one shown on the map by Kings Beck. Instead reach the line of grouse butts leading up Fell Shin where the trail leads. The ground levels out when the sky line is reached before a final rise to the summit trig.

Continued SSE following the fence line over Moss Law to Holm Nick. This could be quite wet after rain. At the Nick, a vehicle track can be followed for a short distance up Glenwhappen Rig. But the ground is easy, still following the fence. Then swing west when the climb eases. The summit of Gathersnow Hill is a pathetic cairn by the fence. At the time of my visit there was a rusty fence post sticking out of it.

From here there is the choice of completing a round of Coulter Reservoir by going over Hillshaw Head and making use of the wind farm roads to Hudderstone and Woodycleuch Dod. Or a more direct and quicker return can be made by aiming for the track to the north west and then following this around the Reservoir and 3km by Culter Water.
