Ascent Trip Report

There is an amazing dome (Shaft BM) you see from the observation point and I had read that that feature was class 4. Did not want to try and do that late in the day by myself and frankly it is scary looking from the observation point and the Peakbagger Photo. So as a consolation prize, I talked Karen into dropping me off along the paved road by the campground and I looked for a doable route up this USGS point. There is plenty of class 5 to avoid but if you follow the ravine between the two points most of the way is class 2+ with a few moves of 3 here and there. Up near the top, the choices are interesting. There was a seam in the rock that I could run up class 3+ but the down climb was a bit sketchy so I contoured the red ribbed sandstone around to the backside. Then found an easy class 3 with limited exposure and summitted. Note the GPS tracks do not show true summit. I stood on the clear highest ground. Then I looked at Shaft BM and saw the clear path up the beast. from this USGS point you can really see exactly how to tackle the hike and it does not look as bad as it did from the observation point where the photo is taken!

On the way down, I found an easier class 3 pitch of white sandstone and stayed in the white band back to the route up. This is relatively safe but fun quick scramble with great views of Shaft BM. If you go after Shaft BM you may want to scope it out from here
