Ascent Trip Report

I had driven up to the Huehue St. "TH" four days earlier and parked pretty much where Dean Gaudet and Mr. L. did a couple of years ago. However, as I was sitting in the car getting the sunscreen on at 7am, a Kamehameha Schools (the landowner) truck drove by. The driver didn't return my wave but instead unlocked the gate that I had intended to hop, drove through and locked up again. I hoped he was there to let a tour group in, but instead he appeared to be there to keep me out! He made himself comfortable on the tailgate of the truck, pulled out binoculars to scan the area uphill...and me in the car. Then he pulled out a newspaper and food. Since I'd driven all that way (and I'm stubborn) I waited there an hour until I finally gave up and did Plan B (Kaunu o Kaleihoohie).

So this time I got to the gate earlier (6am) and had no trouble. If you're not an early riser, I suppose doing this peak on a weekend might work - both times I was there on a weekday.
