Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the Lowani Hart Woods Natural Area off of SW Hart Road to have good public parking. Then I created a route to earn this Urban Summit. I took the lower trails through the woods and crossed the nice flowing clear stream of Johnson Creek and looped around and back in this nice little urban natural park. Then headed up a number of residential streets making sure I went through every park along the way thus going through Carolwood Park, Sexton Mountain Meadows Park, then finally to Matrix Hill Park. I note that the actual peak shown on the USGS map no longer exists. The mining obliterated it and there are houses now where the peak used to be and quite a bit lower. The remaining peak is at least 20 feet lower. My GPS says we topped out at 464 and the historic peak was at least 480 so it has lost between 16 and 20 feet. BUT the new summit has nice views and nice prominence. Sure the actual prom should be lowered for this peak but who cares if it is listed at 190 or 170? The bottom line is it is not a listed peak and it is in the threshold of a 100 foot prom peak not a 300 so it is academic. Still, this was a decent urban summit with nice spring flowers in full bloom! By taking the long loop, I made it a 3 mile hike with 325 feet of gain so the prominence was earned no matter what you call it.
