Ascent Trip Report

"1990 American Pamir Expedition" tom smith - oregon, larry hall - chicago, peter stock - minneapolis, edward hirschowitz - minneapolis, david rhude - minneapolis, matt - Kenyon College, Ohio

edward, peter & I start out the trip in Zermatt, hiking, climb Castor & Pollix, i fall in a crevasse on the Italian approach, pulled out by peter & swiss guide. margo tolins also along.

we fly to Moscow & meet the rest of the team, tour about, then fly to Osh which is under siege... remember this is the end of the RussianAfgan War.... lots of unhappy, well armed & very nervous folks of all stripes who dont like each other. we bus into the Pamirs and Atchitash Base Camp. hard rain on the first few days & we hear of an avalanche to buries their traditional Camp 2 on the north wall of Peak Lenin... we eventually learn some 60 climbers are buried. worse mountaineering accident ever.

we chopper over to the base camp between Pik Korzenevskoi & Kommunisma.
