Ascent Trip Report

Ascended from the Lovell Canyon side after failing to finish it years ago from this direction. The hike to First Creek Overlook Peak is incredibly easy and takes less than an hour and the hike once you cross over the ridge/saddle to summiting Mount Wilson is also less than an hour. The hard part of this hike is the near 90 degree angle scree nightmare between First Creek Peak and Mount Wilson which took me 1.5 hours to get down and around an hour to get back up. If there were once cairns marking an easy way through the scree none of them exist anymore and there are trails everywhere none of which are any good or safe. Took a horrible scree route down that entailed basically doing a baseball style foot first slide most of the way down. On the way back up I stayed near the ridge leading up to First Creek Overlook and basically did a free solo rock climb most of the way. Either option is equally sketchy and will lead to a bad fall if you slip, personally I recommend using the ridge and doing the rock climb versus the scree. Total trip was around 5.5 hours including some food stops and watching a couple people slackline up near the summit. View from the summit is incredible, if you have time I recommend taking a different route like the standard First Creek.
