Ascent Trip ReportI had an open weekend and, not quite ready for another epic in the Sierra, decided to take on something a little easier. The wildflower superbloom was peaking, and with Carrizo Plain being a reasonable four-hour drive away, I decided to make a weekend out of it with some obligatory peakbagging.
I drove to Paso Robles on Friday afternoon and continued to Carrizo Plain in the morning. The valley was foggy, but it burned off after about an hour. I made it to the Caliente Ridge Trailhead easily with my rental SUV, and there were a few sections where I was glad to have all-wheel drive and high clearance. There were many folks that had spent the night parked alongside the road. There were only two other cars at the trailhead when I started around 8:15am. The wildflowers were out in force along the ridge, with mostly yellow flowers with an occasional pocket of blues. However, it was clear that the Temblor Ridge across the plain was going even stronger with yellow, orange, and purple blanketing the entire ridge. I jogged along the ridge to further my efforts to become a trail runner and summited Caliente Mountain around 10:10am. I enjoyed the views and chatted with another climber that arrived a few minutes after me. I jogged on the way back to the car, perhaps foolishly tripling the length of my previous longest trail run, and finished around 12:45pm.
Being a Saturday afternoon, the park was now overflowing with people. I stopped at the overlook of Soda Lake on the drive back to Paso Robles. I watched college basketball back at the motel (the notorious Auburn-Virginia game) before deciding to drive back to the Bay that night. The drive was pleasant at night without the many trucks entering and exiting the farm roads along 101. I was back at my apartment at 11:00pm.
