Ascent Trip Report

An easy recovery hike after the 35-mile 11,000 ft gain Santa Barbara Nine Trails ultramarathon yesterday. My new friend Sam from the hostel I was staying at joined me for the 1.75-ish mile walk up to the top of Mount Pinos from the parking lot at the Nordic Base Camp. Spring is in full effect and the sun was out. The snow was nice and compact and made walking on it very easy and pleasant. Snowshoes not even necessary. Some skiers were out on the mountain and not too many hikers. Just past the summit area there is a more peaceful and scenic spot (sans radio tower) for a more natural experience. There are some nice old windswept Bristlecone Pine trees in this area. I would have liked to have included Sawmill mountain as it didn't look very far, but this wasn't meant to be a strenuous hike. Just pure enjoyment.
