Ascent Trip Report

Skinned up Cedar Creek Trail from MP 176 on Highway 20, started 7 am. Crossed the creek on a burly snow bridge at 4000'. Partly sunny weather until about 2, then light snow. Made my way up to Shelokum Lake and ascended the E facing basin just S of S summit. Bad bad glop on the skins - graupel falling on warming transitioning snow. Booted from about 7500' with skis until I found myself on snow-covered slab. Transitioned to axe and crampons, excavating a snow gully, searching for handholds and footholds. Sketchy. Reached the ridge and discovered my mistake - there is a hidden N facing gully from the main open slope right where 7600' is marked on USGS. Should have gone that way, but probably crappy booting in snow. It took 1 hour to reach the summit along the complex, snow-covered ridge in enthusiasm-sapping wind and snow. 30 min to get back. Skied down that little N gully to easier terrain, set up camp by 6 pm at 6500' near some miraculously running and accessible water.
