Ascent Trip ReportRoute 2c Up; but then tried a different down. Headed in opposite direction and left maintenance road in favor of open country bushwhacking the south exposure by splitting the main trails and staying close to the natural bench when I could. This route took me up and over and down several ravines and shoulders so I continued to get gain lose and regain for all 3.5 miles. This backcountry return got me in close proximity to a small herd of elk and I found at least 4 deer skeletal remains including 2 complete deer skulls.
Interestingly this gave me the ability to calibrate my gps ap in my phone. Most of the regains were 25 to 40 feet tall but the GPS was not registering them. I was hoping it would register anything above 5 feet of gain -certainly 10 feet or more but the ap and GPS do not. I carefully counted every 5 feet of gain and regain on the way back and came up with an estimate of 725 feet. I am confident I am withing 5 to 10%. My GPS only recorded 300 feet. I noticed this right from the start of the downclimb when I deliberately set up to climb two small nubs that was at least 15 to 20 feet of total regain and the phone GPS measured it as only 6 feet.
I will not include this as a "route" as it was not on the trail system but it was a nice change of scenery and got me out of the thick mud from the snow melt.
