Ascent Trip Report

Started at Cool Canyon around 11:30 a.m. Followed the route checking my Gaia Gps app to make sure I took the correct turns. Eventually I came to a fork in the road. Both of the trails join back together so it doesn't really matter which one you decide to take. I decided to go right and follow the North trail. After a few minutes I checked my map to realize I'd missed another turn and was off trail. Instead of staying on the North trail I splintered off and started climbing between the two trails shown on my map. Going up was a grueling effort and I used some dried out yucca stalks as hiking poles. But eventually I managed to hike to the Southern trail that I'd decided not to take when I was at the fork. From there I followed cairns all the way to the top. Views were incredible. You could see patches of yellow flowers on the hills North of S3 and everything between the Cuyamaca Mtns and the top of Granite was covered in green.

On my way down I took the South route and stumbled a few times. Careful of stepping on big rocks when the soil is loose. I had one give under my foot. In retrospect, I would probably try going down that middle route I took on the way up. It seemed a lot safer, especially if you fell.
