Ascent Trip ReportI was on my way home to Missouri from a climbing trip in South Carolina and I searched for possible climbs close to my return route. Mount Roosevelt only required a 6 mile detour and it was a drive up on a road that was surprisingly neither gated nor posted, even though there was a communication tower on top. The access road is easy to find and it is signed. About .9 mile up this road there is a dirt road to the left that provides a good view to the west and in another .6 mile you reach the summit with a loop road around the fire lookout tower. This tower was fenced with a high chain linked fence topped with razor wire, but the gate was wide open; however, the first flight of steps was removed, so access to the tower is not possible. It does allow you to step underneath the tower where the summit benchmark is located on top of a cement post. The tower has a large lighted star bolted to it and at night, if it is functioning, it must provide an attractive sight from the lower elevations to the east. There is a good view in that direction and there are several picnic table on that side of the summit, but unfortunately, there is a lot of litter, so it looks like it is a weekend party spot for teenagers. If you have time, continue driving west on Highway 70/1 and before you reach I-70 again you reach Ozone Falls on the south side of the road which is well worth a visit.
