Ascent Trip Report

Arrived for my meeting MON in San Fran the day before on SUN. Checked in to the hotel and had the Uber drop me off on Royce Way. This is not an official Th but the trail is shown on Google Maps. You basically dead end on Royce Way and start climbing the western shoulder of San Bruno. This trail is VERY steep. I would normally call a steep maintained trail a 1+ but this was straight up and if wet would be treacherous. I call it a 2 even though it is not talus. you climb about 700 feet in the first half mile. I got confused at a three way trail intersection and continued upward and it resulted in a dead-end into a fence. The GPS track will show that. I hiked back down to the intersection this time heading downhill and north and acquired the correct well maintained and easy class 1 sloped trail that was well marked but that mistake and down-climb added gain to the overall trip.

Near the top to get the actual peak you have to follow the tower paved maintenance road and the there is not trail to the top. I scrambled up a nasty loose rock face near a fenced in tower area and the tallest point appeared to be a rock just outside the fence near an old wooden platform. The views from the summit were most rewarding and it was a sunny pleasant day.

I hiked back down to the north over to the Guadalupe Canyon Parkway where the park entrance gate is - and called another Uber to take me to the next area.
