Ascent Trip Report

.....continuing from the TR from the ascent of Monte Luna. At the saddle between the two peaks, Willie and I headed up the Sun Mountain. This is the more popular peak to climb with more social trails, more open views and more large boulders. It is clearly the attractive peak to climb but it is slightly lower and does not cross the 300 foot prominence threshold that many seek. The social trail from the saddle (unlike the more commonly climbed routes nearer to the college) has a lot of cactus along the path. I was very worried about Willie getting thorns in his paws so I had him on a very awkward short leash length and had to guide him very carefully all the way to the summit. On the summit we encountered to other hikers. They acknowledged that the path we used was full of cactus and recommended one of two other social trails down that would be better for the dog. I must say, however, that following these "trails" at the top was not easy as they braided and re-branched so many times I was off bushwhacking much of the time and then suddenly found the path again. I just kept heading towards the obvious water tank and eventually found a social trail we could follow so my GPS track is probably on some sort of trail about 65 to 70 % of the time and off the rest.
