Ascent Trip Report

Escaping the heavy snowy winter in CO this year, We drove down to Santa Fe to take in the art and find some good training hikes. This is the most common premier hike near the down town and sure enough it is on public land and only 5 minutes from the downtown and the hotel we stayed. The parking lot at the St Johns College was easy to find and plenty of parking. The trails are easy to follow and well marked. The only bummer was some unexpected snow the night before but not enough that I ever had to use my microspikes. Karen elected to use hers. The ecosystems change fast along this hike from a juniper woods to mixed Pinon pine and Juniper to only Pinon Pine to Pinon pine and Pondersosa Pine. At the summit there was one cluster of Gambrel's oak at the summit. Nice views up high along the hike. Decent prominence so a decent day hike of 8 miles more or less. There is a lot of bumpy meandering terrain so there is far more extra gain on this than one would expect if you measure it all (and not use the highpointers rule of anything over 40 feet). My GPS indicated we meandered up and down somewhere between 150 and 200 feet of extra gain each way.
