Ascent Trip Report

Trailhead is at the Goodan Ranch Preserve staging area, 16281 Sycamore Canyon Road, Poway, CA. Access is from Poway Road, Garden Road, and Sycamore Canyon Road. There is a unisex restroom nearby, but no water. Walking north outside the park is a private driveway, and then Calle de Rob, which leads to a locked gate. If you look beyond the gate you can see a kiosk of the type seen on many San Diego County Trails. The area beyond the fence is off limits for some kind of biological study. I spoke to the Rangers and they offered no suggestions on how to access Scripps-Poway Hill. Trails are in the planning stages.

Turning left, or north, from Calle de Rob are a number of private homes and it is sometimes unclear what is a private driveway and what is a surface street. You can see Scripps-Poway Hill and the Nearby Peaks function says it is 0.7 miles as the crow flies. Keeping to the right, or east, I bushwhacked my way up a lesser hill and across a stream until I found a bike trail which led to the base of Scripps-Poway Hill. I followed the bike trail until I found a route to the peak, which was a fairly standard bushwhack and goat path. Arriving at the peak, I matched the blue dot with the brown dot on the Peakbagger app. I left a little geocache near the peak, but I'm not sure if I included a pen. The peak itself is a scrambleable boulder.

From the peak, I could see the homes at Calle de Rob and followed the contours and goat path to return to the bike path, then turned left toward Calle de Rob, crossing streams, bushwhacking, and getting tangled particularly in the riparian growth. I walked down one of those residential driveways and back to the Goodan Ranch staging area. There are also excellent views of the San Vicente Reservoir, Mt. Helix, Coronado Islands, Downtown San Diego, Cowles Mountain, Point Loma, Mt. Soledad, Black Mountain, Mt. Woodson, Iron Mountain, and Cajon Mountain. Cuyamaca was obscured by clouds. The communities of Poway, Sabre Springs, and Scripps Ranch are down below.

Goodan Ranch has an interesting history of its own, which you are free to research. It is operated by the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation and has a website to describe its scenic and natural wonders. There are many hiking trails and bike paths. Scripps-Poway Hill does not exist within the Preserve boundaries, and access to the Hill via Preserve roads is blocked by locked gates. Traveling cross country, I encountered no signs. The bike path can be accessed from Scripps Poway Parkway which, incidentally, does not appear on the Peakbagger topo map. The Parkway has been open for at least 20 years. It connects I-15 with Hwy 67.

There is a kind of hidden turnoff from Scripps Poway Parkway that leads to Sycamore Canyon Road. Sometimes the gate is locked. I would think it plausible to park under the bridge, and follow the bike path on the Parkway to the bicycle turnout. The Parkway is clearly marked with No Parking signs and the turnout has a fairly high curb to indicate that parking is not encouraged. There are no fences, signs, or locked gates to discourage entry. Scripps-Poway Hill is 1.4 miles from the bridge as the crow flies.
