Ascent Trip ReportThis was the fourth summit after Rime Gedel ( www.peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=1121803 ) of a 2 week trip to Northern Ethiopia.
We base ourselves in Debre Tabore where we overnight in the Gafat hotel, our room overlooking the busy and chaotic town bus compound. The 126mile drive from Lalibela takes 6hrs 10mins leaving time in the afternoon to visit the nearby Iyasus Hill.
Depart 07:15 and drive back E to Gasay (09:40) where we turn right onto tarmac road. Quickly leave the town and where the road bends right(09:45) we take the LH fork on to good dirt road. We follow this road gently ascending through farmland to the uncultivated grassy slopes of Guna Terara. Cross a little valley before reaching a shoulder at high point of road at N11.68478deg.,E038.21084deg.,3698m. This is out trail head. Mini buses use this road so guess it should be possible to get here from Debre Tabore bus compound.
We ascend NE over the gently grassy hillside dotted with rock outcrops and Giant Lobelia to reach the gently undulating summit ridge. Cross the S Top (4064m,P26) and onto the summit of Guna Terara with outcropping rock. Cool in the fresh W wind. The Abney confirms this as the highest summit on the ridge.
We continue our traverse of the ridge crossing the N.Top (4112m,P12), Far N.Top (4099m, P48) and shapely grassy peak (3918m,P54) before descending NE into farmland and path down to the main road(14:00)
Lunch in Debre Tabore before driving to Gondar where we are treated to a night in the exceedingly pleasant Goha Hotel (~US$85/room/night) where electricity, water and hot showers all work. Fine views out over Gondar.
The next day we head N to Debark and start of 6day trek in the Simien Mountains.
